‘Idol’ Winner Fantasia Receives Gift from Oprah Winfrey After Wrapping ‘The Color Purple’

American Idol Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino recently shared a special gift on Instagram from Oprah Winfrey. Fantasia recently wrapped production on the movie musical version of The Color Purple.
Fantasia Receives Gift from Oprah Winfrey for ‘The Color Purple’
Earlier this year, it was announced that Fantasia had been cast as Celie in a movie musical version of The Color Purple. The new film is based on the Broadway musical, which in turn was based on the 1985 movie, which was adapted from the 1982 novel by Alice Walker.
The movie wrapped filming last month. Fantasia, who had previously played Celie on Broadway, came home earlier this week to a very special gift. The legendary talk show host appeared as Sofia in the 1985 film and produced both the Broadway musical and the new movie.
In an Instagram video, Fantasia shared that she had just gotten home after performing three shows and found two big boxes in her foyer. The singer said she cried when she saw what was inside — a gramophone with a plaque that reads, “Fantasia Barrino as Celie, The Color Purple Musical Experience, 2022.”

Winfrey Included a Note with the Gift
The gift also included a handwritten notecard from Winfrey. According to Heavy, the card reads in part, “Fantasia — What it took to do this — only you know. I do know the sacrifice and weight of it all. Your reward is coming. Wait til the world responds to the Celie you’ve created.”
In her Instagram caption, Fantasia thanked Winfrey. She wrote “I’ve been going so hard that this reminded me of the work we all just put in.” She added, “The World isn’t Ready for what our Purple Family cooked up.”
The Color Purple movie musical is directed by Blitz Bazawule also stars Taraji P. Henson, Ciara, Halle Bailey, Colman Domingo, Danielle Brooks, Corey Hawkins, and H.E.R. The film is scheduled to be released December 20, 2023.
