‘Alter Ego’ Recap: Semifinals Continue with Emotional Performances

Fox

Reading Time: 3 minutes

On Wednesday night, FOX’s new singing competition Alter Ego returned for the second episode of the Semifinals. The series, hosted by Rocsi Diaz, uses modern motion-capture technology to put a totally new spin on the classic talent show format.

The show’s contestants design their own avatar or “Alter Ego.” They control the avatar’s movements from backstage while they perform. The winner of this season will receive $100,000, as well as the mentorship of the show’s celebrity judges — Alanis Morissette, Grimes, Nick Lachey, and Will.i.am.

Tonight, four contestants performed for a chance to make it to the Finals, and two contestants were eliminated at the end of the night. The episode featured some great performances and emotional moments from the singers.

Safara Tears Up Before ‘Alter Ego’ Performance

Before she sang on Wednesday night, Safara (aka Mariah Rosario) teared up as she talked to the judges about what the show means to her. “I’ve been told my whole life that I will never make it as a singer because of the way that I look,” she shared, adding that she wants to “prove everybody wrong.”

She went on to sing Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” showing off a powerful voice and sending an inspiring message. The performance inspired a great dad joke from judge Nick Lachey, who said she’s “come so far-a” in the competition.

Unfortunately, the judges didn’t vote to put Safara on the diamond, and at the end of the night, she received the fewest votes from the audience. Fellow contestant Seven was shocked to see her go. As she left the competition, Safara shared that the show taught her “to be confident in myself and love myself.” It got the judges choked up.

Judges Vote to Send Seven to the Finale

This was a tough week, because all four of the performances were strong. Dipper Scott (aka Jacob Thomsen) ended the show on the diamond after his sensitive performance of “Happier” by Bastille, meaning he went straight to the Finals. After Safara’s elimination, it came down to Seven (aka Kyara Tetreault) and Orlando Deville (aka Chase Padgett) for the judges’ save.

Seven declared that “the world needs love” before her performance of “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone, showing off her incredibly deep voice and cool style. At the end of the song, she literally melted into the stage before re-materializing. Grimes told her it was “totally fire,” and the judges voted to put her on the diamond. She was later replaced by Dipper Scott

Orlando Deville performed “Living in New York City” by Robin Thicke, showing off an amazing stage presence to go along with his classic voice. Alanis Morissette summed it up by saying his swagger was “full-blown.” He didn’t make it on the diamond, meaning he was up for elimination.

The judges voted to keep Seven in the competition, which makes sense considering how much emphasis they always put on uniqueness. But it’s not all about weirdness in Seven’s case — she definitely has the talent to back it up. Unfortunately, that meant that Orlando Deville was eliminated. He shared a great parting message to his Alter Ego, saying, “Mr. Deville, I will take it from here.”

Seven and Dipper Scott will now join Night Journey and Misty Rose in next week’s finale episode. Who are you rooting for? Let us know in the comments.
