The Teen Angel himself made an appearance this week on Dancing with the Stars for Grease Night. Frankie Avalon, who sang “Beauty School Dropout” in the iconic 1978 movie, performed the song live in the ballroom while Amanda Kloots and professional dancer Alan Bersten danced their Viennese Waltz.

Tonight’s episode was filled with surprise guests from Olivia Newton John via video call to Didi Conn, who played Frenchie in the film.

“Frenchie just wants everyone to not only be beautiful on the inside, but to know that they’re loved,” Conn told Amanda to inspire her before the dance.

The extra inspiration definitely helped. The pair earned their first 10s of the season. Not just from one judge, but from Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Len Goodman all leading to the highest score of the season so far.

Amanda wore pink head to toe (including that notorious pink Frenchie wig) while Avalon performed his original song from the ballroom staircase. A collection of background dancers all wearing silver curlers in their hair really had this dance looking like a scene from the musical.

“The icing on the cake is one of my teenage heroes, Frankie Avalon,” announced judge Goodman after the dance. All I can say is if Avalon is Goodman’s teenage hero, Avalon looks really great for his age.

The couple scored 39 out of 40, just shy of a perfect score due to holdout Derek Hough.

“There is something for me I can’t quite put my finger on,” he said. “There’s like this moment I don’t know what it is whether it’s choreography or is it a move… I don’t know…that I want to tip it over the edge to give you that 10, for me.”

The rest of the judge couldn’t agree, with Tonioli jumping out of his seat as always giving the pair their 10.

“When it comes to beauty and legs you have nothing to fear, in fact you have plenty to spare,” he said. “I really felt like you stepped out of a dream into an enchanting Viennese Waltz. Splendid!”

Amanda and Alan have been frontrunners throughout the competition. Despite dropping slightly during the two performances during Disney Week, the pair are judge favorites who definitely redeemed themselves with this star-studded performance.

Voting is now open and will remain open until the final commercial break of the episode before the next couple is eliminated.
