Kelly Clarkson has had a very successful first two seasons of The Kelly Clarkson Show. The Emmy Award-winning host just had her show renewed for two more years because fans absolutely love it. While Kelly’s show is thriving, The Ellen DeGeneres Show which has the coveted 3 pm timeslot is experiencing a dip in ratings. Many think this will pave the way for The Kelly Clarkson Show to take over this time slot.

Kelly Clarkson Could Take Over Ellen Degeneres’ Talk Show Time Slot

In December 2020, Ellen lost 400,000 viewers of her show. This comes after Ellen was called out by former employees who said that the work environment of The Ellen Show is “toxic.” Employees accused the 62-year-old of turning a blind eye to sexual misconduct by top-level producers and racism backstage.

Ellen who always encourages her audience to “be kind,” was said to be anything but by her current and former employees. After Warner Media conducted an investigation and found some of the claims to be true, she apologized to her staffers in an email and her show has returned to television. However, the show certainly has been facing consequences with a dip in ratings.

“It is a disaster. All the bad publicity might have finally caught up with her. Plus, Ellen tested positive for COVID-19 and had to shut down taping and then was spotted holiday shopping without a mask. She isn’t doing herself any favor,” a source told OK! Magazine. Ellen’s contract expires in 2022 and she will reportedly be entering talks about the future of The Ellen DeGeneres Show next month.

The Kelly Clarkson Show is experiencing quite the opposite after becoming the most-watched new daytime talk show in seven years. It has been produced and distributed by NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution since September 2019. The viewership was even able to match some of Ellen’s numbers which pose the question about whether or not Kelly will take over Ellen’s time slot.

Will Ellen Step Away From Television?

Ellen owns the rights to The Ellen DeGeneres Show so simply put, she cannot be replaced. Instead, the network would have to launch a whole new show with a different format. But it is possible for someone like Kelly to take over the time slot.

“Telepictures knows Ellen wants out, but execs want to keep the time slots and put another host in her place,” a source told Page Six. “Kelly would likely get Ellen’s time slots, but Telepictures will fight to keep them.” Though she is currently going through a divorce from her husband Brandon Blackstock, it is clear that The Voice coach is dedicated to working and taking her show to new heights.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show first aired in 2003 and has won 61 Daytime Emmy Awards since then. A current employee told BuzzFeed that it has been difficult booking guests on the show since Ellen’s workplace scandal. “For the first time, everyone was starting to ask us, ‘If you have an idea, tell us because we will listen. If you have an idea for a celeb, even if they’re not A-list or famous, we’ll take anyone who will bring us numbers and eyeballs,'” the employee said. The show is currently airing it’s 18th season.
