Corey Auditioned For The Show Last Season
Corey tried out for Season 19 of The Voice, singing “Way Down We Go” by Kaleo. Unfortunately, he didn’t turn any of the coach’s chairs. Gwen Stefani complimented his “gravel,” but didn’t hear the range in his voice.
The coaches encouraged him to keep trying, and that’s exactly what he did when he returned for the next season. Before leaving his first audition, Corey said, “I always want to grow.” For his Season 20 audition, Corey said the key was “staying true to who I am.”
His Mom Is Battling Cancer
Corey’s mom Donna has been battling cancer since June 2019. In November 2020, they shared an update on Instagram. Donna shared that her last scan, of her lungs and abdomen, came back clear with no signs of cancer.
Corey’s mom was supposed to watch his previous audition virtually, but had to be rushed to the hospital. This time, she got to see him perform. The singer called The Voice a reason to celebrate and “have light in dark times.”
Corey Ward Is In A Cover Band
Corey and three of his friends in North Carolina have a cover band called Oakcty. They perform popular songs from the ’80s, ’90s, and today, at events like weddings and birthday parties. They’ve also performed gigs at sports bars.
He’s Covered Some Popular Songs
Corey has posted several covers on his Instagram, including a performance of “Hallelujah” in tribute to his mom. He’s also collaborated with fellow musicians for some amazing covers.
In the video above, he teams up with singer Christina Munsey for a performance of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born. We’d love to hear him sing this on The Voice this season.
Corey Made Friends On ‘The Voice’
Although he didn’t make it through last season on The Voice, Corey told a local radio station that he became “really close” with some of his fellow contestants. Some of his favorites from the season were Cami Clune and Ian Flanigan. “I love them all,” he said.
