With millions of people working from home due to the outbreak of coronavirus, now more than ever Americans are spending all of their time glued to the screen. Working/studying from home means there has been a surge in video calls, conferencing, ordering food online and for some even social interaction. This has its side-effects and one of them is ‘porn eye’.

What is Porn Eye and Why Are Americans At Risk?

According to the first-quarter 2018 Nielsen Total Audience Report, almost half of an American’s day is spent consuming content online. In fact, American adults spend over 11 hours per day listening to, watching, reading or generally interacting with media behind the screen.

Tom Broughton defined the term ‘Porn Eye’ for “a generation who are living out their lives on smartphones and thereby damaging their sight”, and has seen a sharp rise in prescription glasses since they launched in 2013. And when interviewed by The Sun, Tom Broughton suggested people are now spending more time than ever indulging in spreadsheets and video calls in the comfort of their own home.

He said, “Porn Eye is a condition which puts undue stress and tension on eyes through continuous mobile phone viewing. Watching adult material on a smart-phone is not going to help your eyesight; you are looking at tiny images and sometimes the video quality can be poor, which leaves you straining your eyes.”

Working and Studying From Home Has Alarming Side-Effects On Our Eyes

As Americans adjust to working from home, they will become more dependant on the screen in front of them and it can have adverse side-effects. Remember the time our parents asked us not to watch too much TV growing up?

According to experts, staring at the computer, tablet, and smartphone screens will not permanently damage your eyesight, which is a relief. You were wrong mom. But by being in front of the screen so much, we can experience some unpleasant side-effects, most notably computer vision syndrome (also called digital eye strain).

The American Optometric Association declared vision-related issues as the most prevalent type of health complaint among computer workers. Which was bad before we were quarantined and now that we are stuck in our home without much to do at home, it is bound to get worse and fast.

Studies indicate 50-90% of computer users experience symptoms indicative of computer vision syndrome or porn eyes. Moreover, the level of discomfort appears to get worse the longer one continues to stare at a screen. The common symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome include:

1 Eyestrain
2 Headaches
3 Blurred vision
4 Dry eyes
5 Neck and shoulder pain

4 Ways To Prevent Porn Eye During Coronavirus

1. Set up computer screens that are about 18-30 inches away from where you are sitting and make sure it is in the correct position ie the top of the screen should be in line with eye level.

2. Balance the brightness of the computer screen to that of the room and make sure there is no glare on the screen. Once you have the screen taken care of ensure that your environment is not the culprit. To do so, make sure that light does not shine directly on your screen by adjusting your lights in the room and adjusting the window blinds.

3. Take time away from the screen and blink purposefully. If you experience dry eyes, use a humidifier to add additional moisture in the air. Also ensure that your eyes are lubricated and if needed, take appropriate eye drops.

4. I know this is going to sound so obvious but believe me, it works. Clean your computer screen regularly to prevent the build-up of dust. A clear screen ensures better visibility and reduces stress on the eyes.
