12 Of ‘American Idol’s Top 24 Perform For Real

Reading Time: 3 minutes

It was a night to remember as half of the top 24 contestants on American Idol took to the stage to sing their little hearts out. They were all mentored by celebrity country radio DJ Bobby Bones. I’m not sure what he knows about actual singing, but I guess he knows music. Some of his advice was useful, especially to the greener singers. So, let’s dive in, shall we?

Dominique

Dominique did Ain’t Nobody by Rufus & Chaka Khan and it was off the chain, as nobody says anymore. Dominique’s soulful voice is going to get him far in the competition.

Layla Spring

Young country girl Layla Spring hit the stage with A Broken Wing by Martina McBride and gave one of my favorite performances of the night. People thought maybe she just got on because she has a cute little sister. No way, this girl can sing.

Catie Turner

Oh, Catie. We love you and your quirky styles. But you are the real deal. She’s got an incredible voice and she showed it off singing Call Me by Blondie, which you wouldn’t think she could pull off but she does.

Dennis Lorenzo

Dennis has a heart warming story, but that’s not why he’s there. He wants to win and has the voice that could get him there. He did Rude by MAGIC! and annihilated it. He’s one to watch out for.

Michelle Sussett

Michelle uses her natural Venezuelaness to her advantage once again as she adds Latin flavor to If I Were A Boy by Beyonce. When you take on Queen B you had better bring it and she did. But she needs to be careful that her Spanish thing doesn’t begin to feel like a gimmick.

Michael J. Woodward

Now this was also one of my favorites of the night. Damn, this dude can sing. He sang Golden Slumbers by The Beatles and it was downright beautiful. Lennon and McCartney would be proud.

Trevor McBane

The goat farmer with the awesome voice is back with Way Down We Go by Kaleo. The judges love him but think he may still be holding back. I agree. I think there is much more to Trevor than we’ve seen.

Jonny Brenns

One thing is clear: Jonny Brenns isn’t just another pretty face, (though he certainly has that as well). The ladies seem to love Jonny but his voice is the real stand out. He sang Georgia by Vance Joy and it was a sight to behold.

Kay Kay

Kay Kay has stumbled a bit in the past but she brought her A game last night when she sang Love on the Brain by Rihanna. Dare I say she sang it better than miss Rih Rih?

Brandon Diaz

My fellow Cubano Brandon Diaz did a bold move. He sang Lionel Richie’s Hello to his face. He does a really good job and then Lionel comes down and sings it too. OK, so he upstaged Brandon but he’s Lionel Richie and he can do what he wants.

Gabby Barrett

Gabby wants to sing country and Bobby Bones helps her out with some assistance from country star Kelsea Ballerini. Gabby isn’t your usual country artist but she’s pretty amazing.

Cade Foehner

Poor Cade. He did a really good job singing Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower but the whole thing was upstaged by Katy’s flirtatious antics. Katy, please, cut it out. It’s a singing show not Tinder.
