RuPaul’s Drag Race crowned their season 14 winner on Friday night’s episode. After 16 episodes of the season, Willow Pill was ruvealed as the America’s Next Drag Superstar.
Five queens remained as part of the competition in the finale. Angeria Paris VanMichaels, Bosco, Daya Betty, Lady Camden, and Willow fought it out at a Las Vegas drag revue show. They all gave show-stopping performances to songs of their choice. In the end, Lady Camden and Willow competed in the ultimate lip sync.
The two battled it out, lip syncing the tune “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” by Cher. It was tough to predict the winner during the event, since they put on such a great show. Willow brought home the $150,000 prize, in turn Lady Camden brought home the $50,000 runner up prize. During the announcements, Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté was ruvealed as the season’s Miss Congeniality.
“I can’t believe I just won RuPaul’s Drag Race. Somebody pinch my ass because I’m horny and I won, and I couldn’t have done that without you all,” Willow said in a video posted to the RuPaul’s Drag Race Instagram. “It’s going to be an amazing and chaotic year full of me.”
Willow’s win didn’t come as a surprise to RuPaul’s Drag Race fans. Ahead of the announcement, she was the clear frontrunner in the competition. Her iconic win marked the first time a transgender queen has won a regular season of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Willow Pill, Yvie Oddly Make History on RuPaul’s Drag Race
Before season 14 began, it was shared that Willow is the drag sister/daughter of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 11 winner Yvie Oddly. Within the series, Willow revealed that she met Yvie while making a short film in college. At this time, Willow and Yvie are the only winning queens with known chronic illnesses in the franchise.
On top of their honors, Willow’s season was almost identical to Yvie’s. They both won their only main challenge during the second episode, yet received positive critiques for the majority of the season. Both queens received negative criticism in three episodes then were up for elimination for Snatch Game. They then were apart of a double shantay and went on to become the finalists with the least Main Challenge wins. Like (drag) mother, like daughter, Willow went on to also lip sync for the crown against a ballet professional that was not originally from the U.S. and had won three main challenges.
