The Voice returned to NBC on Monday, October 13 for the first round of the highly anticipated Battle Rounds. For those who may not know, battle rounds are the second round of the competition, where singers on the same team perform against each other. In the past, coaches paired singers together, but this season singers get to choose their battle-mate.

In case you haven’t seen the Battle Round before, battle advisors are featured in this round of the competition, to help coaches prepare their artists for the next round. This season’s battle advisors are Lewis Capaldi, Lizzo, Nick Jonas, and Kelsea Ballerini. They will aid the teams of Niall Horan, Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire, and Michael Bublé, respectively. Once again, coaches will have one Steal and one Save. Steal makes it so a coach can take someone from another team, while Save makes it so one singer doesn’t go home.

The Battle Rounds Begin With Team Snoop, Mentor Lizzo

The episode began with Snoop Dogg giving his team the information behind the new rules of the battle round. Singers were told they were going to take a group photo and instead walked into Snoop Dogg to twist up the competition.

The first pairing to perform on the episode was Yoshihanna and Natalia Albertini. Snoop Dogg chose “(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin as the battle song. After the battle, Snoop Dogg was in tears due to how well they sang the song. Even though his heart was broken, he chose Yoshihanna as the winner of the battle. He called the decision “the decision that I didn’t want to make, but I had to make.”

Unsurprisingly, Snoop decided to use his save on Natalia. She really rose to the occasion in her battle. Knowing how special her voice was, he knew if he didn’t use his save, one of the other coaches would hit their save button.

All Coaches Hit Steal for Team Bublé Member

Up next was Reba’s team, who is being mentored by Nick Jonas. The first battle of McEntire’s team was Lameek against Aaron Nichols. The pair’s coach chose “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” by Elvin Bishop as their battle song. Following the performance, McEntire chose Aaron Nichols as the winner of the battle.

Following was Michael Bublé’s team, which was mentored by Kelsea Ballerini. The first battle for this team featured four-chair turn artists Trinity and Jazz McKenzie, singing “Virtual Insanity” by Jamiroquai. Other coaches had a hard time picking a winner of the battle, Bublé ultimately ended up picking Jazz McKenzie.

Although Trinity was originally eliminated, Bublé hit his save, while all the other coaches hit their steal buttons. Even though Trinity had the option to join any team, she decided to forgive Bublé and continue the competition out on his team.

Snoop’s Team Performs Impressive R&B Hit

Finally, Horan’s team, who is mentored by Lewis Capaldi, had their first battle. The pair was Dustin Dale Gaspard against Revel Day, singing “Too Sweet” by Hozier. After hearing from all of the coaches, Horan decided Dustin was the winner.

The show then returned to Snoop’s team for the pairing of Kenny Iko against Kanard Thomas. The pair sang “All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do)” by Joe, impressing all of the coaches. Kenny and Kanard absolutely crushed this performance, making Snoop Dogg’s decision hard (especially since he already used his save). Kenny was ultimately the winner of the battle because he put on more of a show than Kanard.

The episode finished out with Bublé’s country singers Austin Gilbert against Rob Cole. The pair sang “Honey Bee” by Blake Shelton. This rendition was so great that coaches commented first on the energy of the room. Ultimately, Bublé decided the winner of the battle was Rob. Luckily, Austin’s time on The Voice wasn’t over yet, McEntire stole the singer.
