Singer Shakira recently expressed gratitude for her ex-partner Gerard Piqué, who is the father of her two sons. The couple broke up in 2022, with Shakira calling the experience her “darkest moment.”
Shakira Expresses Gratitude for Gerard Piqué
Shakira’s split from former footballer Gerard Piqué made headlines in 2022, inspiring the Colombian singer’s 12th studio album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. The couple shares two sons together named Milan and Sasha.
“I will always have that gratitude in my heart for the father of my kids and [for] turning me into the mother that I am today,” Shakira told The Times in a recent interview, adding that Piqué helped with the music video for her new World Cup anthem “Dai Dai.”
“He’s a real soccer expert and helped me find some archive footage. He knows every statistic, every result of every game, of every team. He knows every player, every jersey,” she shared, adding of the potential for a new romance, “There’s no space or time in my life for that. My plate is quite full. My kids are my priority. And my career.”

The Split Was Her ‘Darkest Moment’
Shakira told The Times that her split from Piqué in 2022 was “the darkest moment — when I saw the dissolution of my family, the family that I had dreamt to keep for ever.” Around the same time, the singer’s father was hospitalized.
“I’ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person — or stronger, at least. They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and it is true,” she said. “It’s amazing to learn that humans have a resilience that we can resort to at any moment in our lives. Sometimes through hardships and through pain is how we discover how strong we can be. Suffering sometimes makes you a better person, makes you value friends and support.”
The singer went on to say that she’s thankful “for every single moment, the bright ones and the dark ones, the people who have made me suffer because they have become my masters who have taught me lessons, very valuable lessons.”
