Selena Gomez is set to reprise her iconic role as Alex Russo in an upcoming pilot for a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series on Disney Channel.
Selena Gomez “So Excited” For Return to Her Disney Roots
Gomez will guest star as Alex in the pilot, joining original co-star David Henrie, who is reprising his role as Alex’s brother Justin Russo and will be a series regular. The sequel comes over a decade after the hit original series ended its four-season run on Disney Channel in 2012.
“So excited!!” Gomez wrote on her Instagram Story, sharing a throwback photo of her and Henrie on the Wizards set along with the caption “We’re back.”
The actress got her big break playing Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place from 2007 to 2012. While she has since achieved massive pop stardom, Gomez has expressed nostalgia for the simpler, happier times of working on the Disney show as a teenager.
In an interview last year, Gomez said Wizards of Waverly Place “was definitely the happiest times for me” and that she missed the “pure time” of getting to play Alex. So it’s clear she is ecstatic to now revisit the character that started it all.
Gomez’s thousands of Instagram followers immediately flooded her comments expressing pure excitement over her Disney Channel homecoming.
“MY CHILDHOOD IS BACKKKK,” one fan wrote.

Gomez will guest star while Henrie will remain a series regular if the pilot is picked up.
Story Will Follow Grown-Up Russo Siblings
Plot details revealed that the sequel picks up years later, with Henrie’s character Justin Russo now an adult who has given up his wizard powers to live a normal life with his wife and sons. However, when a powerful young wizard in need of training arrives, he throws the future of the wizard world into jeopardy, compelling Justin to re-embrace his magical roots.
The pilot will introduce new young actors playing the next generation of Russo children. Original creator Todd J. Greenwald is returning for the sequel, ensuring the continuation captures the spirit of the beloved original series for a new generation.
News of a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel has been in the talks for years and has a loyal fanbase. Many have been begging Disney Channel to revive the show and continue the Russo family’s adventures.
Henrie himself pitched a sequel idea back in 2020 focused on the Russo siblings’ lives as adults. So finally seeing the project come to fruition is a dream come true for longtime Wizards of Waverly Place devotees.
