Selena Gomez is not anymore setting unrealistic expectations on her body. The “Who Says” songstress recently reflected on her body image dilemma, showing her then and now photos on Instagram.
Selena Gomez Reflects on Her Body Changes in Recent Instagram Post
Through vulnerable posts on her Instagram Stories, Gomez looked back on her past physical appearance and how her body has changed through the years. The Only Murders in the Building actress shared a photo of her 21-year-old self wearing a zebra bikini in 2013.
“Today I realized I will never look like this again…” she wrote in the pic.
Adter, she posted a photo of her recent bikini pic, wearing a black, high-waisted bikini bottom with a white tube-top bikini top. This was during her beach outing to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 2023. She then wrote another caption, getting real about overcoming her body image struggles.
“I’m not perfect, but I am proud to be who I am… Sometimes I forget it’s ok to be me,” she wrote.
It’s not the first time that Gomez has spoken up about her body image issues. The “Single Soon” singer has been most especially open about this topic after she was diagnosed with lupus in 2014.
In 2017, Gomez underwent a kidney transplant. The mix of her unfortunate medical situations have apparently led her to experience “weight fluctuation.” According to the actress, she began “noticing more of the body image stuff” when her health issues got in the picture.
“It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life — it depends on even the month, to be honest,” she previously said. “So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. And in reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate.”
After Golden Globes in 2023, Gomez explained that she tends to carry a lot of water weight every time she takes some of her medications. Such is something she can’t give up for the sake of looking thinner.
“I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself,” she said. “My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me.”
She Previously Admitted Lying That She Wasn’t Hurt by People’s Criticisms
While Gomez has not shied away from the weight conversations, she’s once admitted that she used to lie about what she actually felt about it. In March 2023, the “Ice Cream” singer said it wasn’t true when she stated that she doesn’t care about what people think.
“I lied. I would go online and I would post a picture of myself and I would say, ‘It doesn’t matter. I’m not accepting what you’re saying,'” she said. “All the while, being in the room posting and crying my eyes out because nobody deserves to hear those things.”
According to Gomez, she didn’t want the criticisms “to bother other people who are experiencing the same thing.” Getting more candid, she said it’s “so unfair” to be ashamed for what she looks like.
During her TikTok Live back in February 2013, the former Disney Channel star sent some words of affirmation as she defended herself from her detractors.
“I just want to say and encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what you’re going through when nobody knows the real story. You are beautiful and you are wonderful,” she said.
