RuPaul’s Drag Race has spoken out against recent anti-drag legislation by donating to the ACLU’s Drag Defense Fund. RuPaul himself also shared a video on Instagram speaking out against these bills, including one in Tennessee which restricts public drag show performances.

RuPaul Speaks Out Against Anti-Drag Legislation

In a video posted to Instagram, RuPaul called this Republican legislation “a classic distraction technique” to draw attention away from the “real issues that they were voted into office to focus on — jobs, healthcare, keeping our children safe from harm at their own school.”

RuPaul described these politicians as bullies who “look for easy targets so they can give the impression of being effective,” adding, “They think our love, our light, our laughter, and our joy are signs of weakness. But they’re wrong, because that is our strength.”

The Drag Race host went on to call drag queens “the Marines of the queer movement.” He encouraged those watching to register to vote for the change they hope to see. In the video’s caption, he also linked to the ACLU’s Drag Defense Fund page.

Drag Race Donates to Drag Defense Fund

Drag Race also shared an Instagram post responding to the recent legislation, writing, “Drag performers and the LGBTQ+ community are facing threats across the country. That’s why RuPaul’s Drag Race, MTV, and World of Wonder are proud to donate to ‘The Drag Defense Fund.'”

The link provided offers fans an opportunity to donate to the cause. As the donation page emphasizes, “In the face of these threats and censorship, you can fight back with the ACLU for the protection of all our rights.”

The page also stresses that drag is “protected by the First Amendment like any creative expression such as dance, fashion, and music.” Donations to the Drag Defense Fund will support the ACLU’s work for LGBTQ+ rights.
