Nick Cannon Praises Mariah Carey for Support During His Lupus Diagnosis

During his recent appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Cannon revisited the days when Lupus took a toll on his overall health. Reflecting on the aching scenario, the tv personality can’t help but be thankful for his first wife.

“She was my rock,” he said. “She went hard. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for how hard she went with the doctors, with me, my stubbornness.”

He continued and stated that Carey was the “perfect helpmate, the perfect matriarch, the perfect mom, the perfect wife in those scenarios,” Noting that Carey was an international hitmaker then, Cannon praised how she managed to be “loving enough to take on all of my stuff.”

“It probably took a toll on [our relationship] just because of the person I was in my head and struggles that I was dealing with. But it definitely brought us closer together,” he said.

Cannon revealed his lupus diagnosis 11 years ago, in 2012. He marked a decade since he was diagnosed in January 2022. The estranged couple married in 2008, until they decided to divorce in 2014. They officially separated in 2016.

At present, they co-parent their 12-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe. Over the years, Cannon and Carey have maintained an amicable relationship dynamic as parents of their kids.

He Says He Wasn’t Scared to Die At The Time

In the same podcast, the comedian also admitted that his lupus diagnosis made him questions regarding his legacy. Understandably, Cannon also questioned if he could still be there for his kids.

“‘Was I going to live? What was life all about? Had I wasted my time?'” he said. “We get caught up in the rat race of the day-to-day, but it slowed down for me on many occasions. Is this a wrap [and is] he almost out of here? And I wasn’t scared, that was the crazy thing when you get to the point where you’re like, ‘Oh, OK, I had a good run… I was content, I wasn’t scared. It happened more than once and it continues to.'”
