A new cover story from Rolling Stone examines former One Direction star Liam Payne’s alleged struggles before he passed away in October of last year. Sources claim that Payne “struggled with his sexuality” in the years before his death.

New Report Claims Liam Payne ‘Struggled with His Sexuality’

A source told Rolling Stone that Payne “struggled with his sexuality” during his relationship with ex-fiancée Maya Henry, adding that he “sexted men” while they were together. His sexts allegedly became known to Henry when Payne accidentally broadcast them to their TV.

Additionally, a source close to Henry told the magazine that Payne’s drug use and mental health issues became “such a burden” that he “couldn’t work properly.” This reportedly got worse during the lockdowns at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, when he wasn’t working.

“It was like you took someone who had mental-health problems, likely had sexuality issues, already had a drug problem, and then you took away everything that kept him busy — recording, touring, interviews, etc. — and he’s just left with his problems,” a source said. “And then Maya was just kind of held captive.”

During their relationship, sources claim that Payne also pushed Henry down the stairs and chased her with an axe. The couple eventually split in May 2022, at which point it was reportedly “normal for Liam to do cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, and pharmaceutical pills.” He also allegedly began smoking heroin.

Payne Reportedly Pushed Henry to Get an Abortion

The new Rolling Stone report also claims that, according to a source, Payne gave Henry an ultimatum when she learned she was pregnant in 2020. He allegedly told Henry that she could “either get an abortion and stay with him, or raise the kid alone and he will not acknowledge either of them.”

“This was a surprise to Maya, because Liam wanted to have a family, and they were trying for a kid,” the source told the magazine. Henry’s experience of terminating the pregnancy would later inspire part of her novel Looking Forward.

In a written statement, Henry told Rolling Stone that Payne was “someone I loved very much,” adding that Payne’s drug use “tore us apart.” She said the late singer “did things that hurt me in ways I’ll never fully understand, and he continued to hurt me years after we broke up.”

“I put myself in situations that were unsafe and harmful, ignoring every red flag,” Henry said. “I knew there were parts of himself he was struggling with — parts of his identity he wasn’t ready to fully face, even within our relationship.… In the end, it wasn’t just the betrayals or the addictions that broke us — it was the realization that I had spent years in something that was never what I thought it was. I don’t fault him for his struggles.”
