Meghan Trainor and Jimmy Fallon brought some extra holiday cheer this week with the debut television performance of their new Christmas duet, “Wrap Me Up.” The bubbly pop star and charismatic talk show host took to the stage on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday night to give fans a festive treat.

Meghan Trainor, Jimmy Fallon Perform Their New Christmas Single Live For The First Time

Trainor dazzled in a red dress decorated with family photos and Christmas icons, really getting into the holiday spirit. Meanwhile, Fallon complemented her look with a red velvet suit jacket as the duo sang and danced with joyful abandon. Several backup dancers and singers, dressed as Santa’s helpers, provided festive energy behind them.

The stage design helped set the mood too, with Christmas trees, piles of presents, and strings of lights transporting viewers straight to Santa’s workshop. It was a playful nod to the lyrics of “Wrap Me Up,” which use gift-giving and unwrapping presents as a cheeky metaphor for romance.

The charm of the live performance marked the latest development for this Christmas collaboration, which has been months in the making. Back in March, Fallon had first revealed he was working on a holiday album filled with original songs. Expectations was high, given his legendary musical sketches over the years on The Tonight Show.

“Nothing sounds like Mariah Carey,” Fallon had promised about his Christmas music plans. Based on the unboxing of “Wrap Me Up,” it seems he’s delivered on bringing something new to the holiday table.

What Made The Duo Collaborate on a Christmas Song?

Trainor and Fallon are no strangers to musical friendship. The two had shared an iconic moment years ago when Trainor accidentally fell mid-performance on Fallon’s late night show. Ever the good sport, she had laughed it off alongside Fallon.

“I want you to keep that in and just show everybody that I’m not perfect,” Trainor said.

So when Fallon floated the idea of a Christmas song collaboration, Trainor was on board. As Fallon tells it, he first sent her a barebones demo of a tune called “Wrap It Up,” with placeholder lyrics like “Wrap it up, wrap it up.” Amusingly, he didn’t hear back immediately.

However, Trainor graciously sent back her own more fleshed-out version and the two FaceTimed to write the complete song in just 90 minutes. The result was the cheerful romantic anthem “Wrap Me Up,” which the duo seem overjoyed to share with the world.

For both artists, Christmas music holds special meaning. In 2020, Trainor released her own Christmas album A Very Trainor Christmas, featuring the single “White Christmas” with Seth MacFarlane. Last year, Fallon dropped the song “It Was A… (Masked Christmas),” a pandemic-inspired track created with pop superstars Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion.
