Meet Zaya: Dwyane Wade And Gabrielle Union’s 12-year-old Transgender Daughter That is Living in her Truth
Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union continue to show what amazing parents they are. The couple recently shared that Dwyane’s 12-year-old child from a previous relationship chooses to go by Zaya now, and prefers she/her pronouns.
The former NBA star spoke to Ellen DeGeneres this week about how important it is for him and Gabrielle to support Zaya (who was assigned male at birth) and learn everything they can about the LGBTQ community.
Dwyane Wade Supports Zaya
Dwyane told Ellen DeGeneres that he and Gabrielle are “proud” to have a child in the LGBTQ community, calling themselves “allies.” He says Zaya came to them to share that she was ready to “live my truth.”
The couple set out to educate themselves, as Dwyane said Gabrielle reached out to the cast of the TV series Pose. He shared that they wanted to give Zaya “the best opportunity to be her best self.”
Gabrielle also shared a video to her social media featuring a conversation between Zaya and Dwyane. “Meet Zaya,” Gabrielle wrote, going on to describe her as “compassionate, loving, whip smart.”
“What is the point of being on this earth if you’re trying to be someone you’re not?” Zaya says in the clip. “It’s like you are not even living as yourself, which is the dumbest concept to me.”
Zaya’s Brother Zaire Shares His Love For Her
Zaya also has the support of her older brother Zaire, who posted on Instagram about her. The 18-year-old called Zaya his “best friend.” He added, “I don’t care what they think Z, you are my best friend and I love you kid, and if it means anything, just know there’s no love lost on this side.”
On a podcast last year, Dwyane Wade said he’s been “ignant” about LGBTQ issues in the past, but it was important for him to educate himself. “I had to look myself in the mirror,” he explained, “and say, ‘What if your son comes home and tells you he’s gay? What are you going to do? How are you going to be? How are you going to act? It ain’t about him. He knows who he is. It’s about you. Who are you?'”
It’s great to see that Zaya has such a supportive family behind her.
