Gabrielle Union And Dwayne Wayde Spoke About Zaya In Award Show Appearance

“We stand as allies with the LGBTQ+ community as proud parents of a transgender child” Dwayne started. “Our daughter Zaya is leading us on our journey and we’re doing all we can to give every one of our kids the ability to live their truth.” He also admitted, “I didn’t always understand how to do that but I want to thank Zaya for teaching me and GLAAD for elevating the images and messages that accelerate acceptance in every family.” Gabrielle was visibly emotional when she said “That mission means even more to us now as we raise all of our black children. Black lives matter and Black trans lives matter.” She continued saying “We are calling on all of our racial justice warriors out there to open your hearts and your minds to the LGBTQ+ community so that we can work together and empower each other and save lives.”

Zaya is Dwayne’s 13-year-old child from a previous relationship. Back in February, the couple began talking about learning more about the LGBTQ community as Zaya wanted to live her truth. In May, the former America’s Got Talent judge called Zaya her “inspiration and motivation” in a sweet birthday tribute and had nothing but praise for the teen. The couple also posed for pictures with the caption “Mom and dad ready to present at the #GLAADawards.” Dwayne has two more children from previous relationships along with custody of his nephew Dahveon. He also shares one-year-old Kaavia with Gabrielle after welcoming her via surrogate.

Dwayne And Gabrielle Are Always Gushing About Being Parents Of A Transgender Child

Back in an appearance on The Ellen Show, Dwayne said “Now it’s our job to one, go out and get information, to reach out to every relationship that we have. My wife reached out to everybody on the cast of Pose. We’re just trying to figure out as much information as we can to make sure that we give our child the best opportunity to be her best self.” They have shown time and time again that they are a very close-knit and supportive family full of love. The cast of Pose, a show about the LGBTQ ballroom scene actually won the award that Gabrielle and Dwayne were presenting at the GLAAD Awards.
