Sweet Taboo is the only all-girl group competing in the American Song Contest semifinals. The California representing group is set to perform an elevated version of their single “Keys to The Kingdom” during the next episode of the series.

America immediately fell in love with the Latina girl group, Sweet Taboo from California during the fifth qualifier round. Their energetic tune “Keys to The Kingdom” was noted to be a chart-topper by fans during the episode. Some would say Sweet Taboo became a fan favorite because their group’s sound mimics the 1990’s group, TLC.

Sweet Taboo is a girl group consisting of southern California best friends, Sami Ramos, Jen Torrejon, and ICP Bre. This group was originally formed by the two singers, Sami and Jen, who met through their vocal coach. They found the other member and only rapper ICP Bre on Instagram. From the start, their intent has been to empower women, as well as spread love and inclusivity through music. The women embrace their Latin descent through their style.

Sweet Taboo’s Formation, Their Iconic TLC Cover

This girl group made their debut on Instagram in September 2019. Appropriately enough, their first cover was a remix of “No Scrubs” by TLC. This video was later featured on the Grammy website as part of the series “Reimagined At Home.”

After their debut, they also began posting videos to their TikTok page. While Sweet Taboo dates back to 2019, they struggled through the hardships of COVID-19 at the beginning of their group’s career. Tons of their videos published in 2020 where filmed separately. The girls often noted in their TikTok captions that they intended to stay entirely safe while still recording covers for their fans.

To this day they have gained millions of views on the video sharing app. Their content has been shared by DJ Khaled, Kehlani, and more. Outside of cover music, Sweet Taboo released their first single, “Used to It,” on November 22, 2019. They have since released two other singles “Lil Bit” and “Keys to The Kingdom.” Even with three original songs released, Sweet Taboo is considered a rising group. They have a unique sound that mixes R&B and hip-hop with a flare of pop and Latin flare.

Their single “Keys to The Kingdom” has earned 42,000 views on YouTube and 18,607 streams on Spotify. I agree with fans when they say that this tune has the ability to make it to the top of the competition. I could see “Keys to The Kingdom” being a song of the summer.
