Lilly Singh Surprises ‘CGT’ Contestant with FaceTime Call from Shawn Mendes

Lilly Singh had an exciting surprise for a Canada’s Got Talent contestant during this week’s new episode. Singer Evangel Omari Besong, 14, had no idea that Shawn Mendes was listening to him perform a cover of his song “Wonder.”
Lilly Singh Calls Shawn Mendes During Canada’s Got Talent
Evangel admitted that he was nervous before he started performing. After he sang and played the keyboard for a little bit, judge Howie Mandel shared some words of encouragement, telling him to start the song over again.
After that, Evangel delivered a stunning performance. That’s when Lilly Singh called him down to the judges’ table, saying she had a surprise for him. She revealed that she was on FaceTime with Shawn Mendes, telling Evangel, “Shawn thought your performance was amazing.”
Evangel was shocked to see Mendes on Singh’s phone. He wiped away tears as Mendes told him, “I’m so happy. Keep singing. I hope everything goes amazing over there for you.”
Singh told Evangel that she had Mendes on FaceTime through his entire performance. As they said goodbye, she jokingly told Mendes that “the producers will be in touch to your lawyers.”

Singh Says the Moment Wasn’t Planned
Singh shared a video of the sweet surprise on Instagram after Tuesday’s episode aired, writing, “I don’t always namedrop my friends. But when I do, it’s to make a young kid smile.”
She went on to write that this “wasn’t a planned moment at all,” adding, “I FaceTimed Shawn during the performance and he thankfully answered because the universe is great like that. You never know what’s going to happen on this show!”
The next episode of Canada’s Got Talent airs Tuesday night at 8/7c on Citytv. Singh teased in her post that they’re “just getting started” and encouraged fans to follow the show for “more magic.”
