A group of young dancers from Galicia, Spain named Lil-Kids shook up the finale of Spain’s Got Talent. Their emotional contemporary dance honoring regional traditions dazzled judges but sparked controversy online. Supporters praised the unique artistry and culture spotlight, while critics questioned if they deserved the top prize.

Lil-Kids Wins Controversial Spain’s Got Talent Finale With Fusion Dance

In the season nine finale competition, only 12 finalists remained to battle for the coveted title of Spain’s Got Talent next champion. Host Santi Millán helmed the show alongside judges Edurne, Risto Mejide, Paula Echevarría, and Florentino Fernández, who together oversaw the contestants and selected a surprise winner.

From their first audition, the dance group Lil-Kids stood out among the field for their originality in fusing components of urban dance with longstanding Galician cultural traditions. Their members range from ages 11 to 17, hailing from the small Galician town of Naron. In their signature style, Lil-Kids incorporated props, costumes, music, and also references nodding to their regional heritage.

In the make-or-break finale performance, Lil-Kids left an impact on the jury and audience with an emotional contemporary tribute piece dedicated to the mythological Galician meigas, or witches. Their choreographed narrative encapsulated the audience in a haunting world of mystical legends through precise movements, flames shooting from stage, and an ominous original score performed live. The spectacular production, ambiance, and technique certainly marked a highlight of the entire season.

Tanxugueiras, an acclaimed all-female Galician musical group, demonstrated their awe by recording a heartfelt video message in support of Lil-Kids. They then congratulated the young troupe’s artistry in blending contemporary dance and long-held cultural touchstones.

Online Backlash Debates Lil-Kids’ Victory

However, despite captivating judges and viewers in the theater, awarding the competition’s top prize to Lil-Kids soon ignited fiery controversy across social media platforms. As audience votes were tallied, many viewers swiftly contested the results.

Some critics proposed reforms around the integrity of the voting system itself to ensure fairness. Multiple dissenting commentators questioned whether Lil-Kids genuinely deserved the champion title or simply won by incorporating an emotive “end-of-year dance” routine. Comparisons arose to other finalists like musician Nikol or dance crew Mega Unity.

“This has happened again. Some kids have won again doing their end-of-year dance,” a fan wrote on Twitter.

“It bothers me that the one who least deserves it always wins Spain’s Got Talent,” Another fan wrote.

Some viewers felt moved more by different contestants over the season. Despite the online confusion swirling after the broadcast ended, the in-theater audience had clearly voted Lil-Kids among their top four favorite acts of the entire finale.
