One Direction Shares Statements on Liam Payne’s Death
Payne passed away on Wednesday after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. On Thursday, each of his bandmates in One Direction released a statement on social media reacting to the news.
Harry Styles posted a photo of Payne performing on stage, writing that he’s “truly devastated” by the singer’s death. Styles added, “His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honor be alongside him as he did it … The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life.”
Niall Horan shared a photo of himself and Payne from years ago. Horan wrote that Payne’s death “doesn’t feel real,” adding, “He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure.” He wrote that he feels “so fortunate that I got to see him recently.”
Louis Tomlinson also shared a photo of himself and Payne, writing that he “lost a brother.” He called Payne “the most vital part of One Direction,” adding that he’s “really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye.” Tomlinson also wrote that if Payne’s 7-year-old son Bear “ever needs me I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was.”
Zayn Malik shared an old photo of himself and Payne sleeping next to each other. He addressed his statement to Payne, telling him, “I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life.” He wrote that he’s “beyond devastated,” adding, “I hope that wherever you are right now you are good and are at peace.”

The Group Also Released a Joint Statement
One Direction’s Instagram account also shared a joint statement from all four surviving members of the group, in which they wrote that they’re “completely devastated” by Payne’s death, adding that there “will be more to say” later.
“But for now, we will take some time to breathe and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly,” the statement continues. “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly.”
Fans in the comments remarked on the fact that it was the first new post on the account since 2020, when the group celebrated their 10-year anniversary. They also expressed sadness that the reunion they hoped for won’t come to pass — at least not with all five members of the group.
