Former One Direction member Liam Payne recently opened up about his personal journey of self-discovery and addressed the controversial comments he made about Zayn Malik during an appearance on Logan Paul’s podcast. Payne, now 29 years old, shared how the experience led him to take a much-needed hiatus from social media and ultimately embark on a transformative 100-day rehabilitation program.
Liam Payne Opens Up About His Controversial Comments
The interview with Logan Paul, which aired in May 2022, garnered significant attention due to Payne’s negative remarks about his former bandmate, Malik. Payne also revealed that he was involved in a physical altercation with another member of One Direction.
However, in his recent video, Payne expressed remorse for his words, acknowledging that he was in a negative headspace and projected his frustrations onto others instead of introspecting. Payne attributed his anger and disappointment to his solo career not reaching the heights he had hoped for after the band’s split in 2016, which coincided with Malik’s departure.
During the podcast, he cited various reasons for his animosity towards Malik, including the singer’s past relationship drama with Gigi Hadid and her mother, Yolanda Hadid. However, Payne realized that his comments stemmed from a lack of understanding and empathy for the challenges Malik had faced on his personal journey.
The former One Direction member also regrets his comments about his fellow band members, acknowledging that they had been there for him during his darkest moments. Payne admitted that his remarks were a form of self-protection and showed gratitude to his former colleagues, including Malik, for coming to his rescue when he needed it the most.
Liam Payne Went On A 100-Day Rehab
As part of his healing process, Payne sought professional help and enrolled in a 100-day rehabilitation program in Louisiana. He has been open about his struggles with mental health, alcohol, and drug issues, and shared that he has now been sober for six months. The singer credited his six-year-old son, Bear, and his ex-partner, Cheryl Cole, for providing him with the necessary support and understanding during his rehabilitation journey.
In his YouTube video, Payne expressed gratitude towards his son and Cole, acknowledging their role in allowing him the freedom to focus on his well-being. He highlighted the importance of being mentally and emotionally available as a father, knowing that he needed to have something significant to offer his son beyond deep care and love.
Reflecting on the entire experience, Payne humorously referred to the podcast as a “big ‘L'” and credited it as a life-changing moment that ultimately saved him. He recognized the impact it had on his life and revealed a renewed sense of self and purpose moving forward.
