Popstar JoJo has been dreaming of performing on Broadway since she was a little girl, and now she’s finally making her debut in the musical adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! as the iconic character Satine. In a recent interview, JoJo shares her excitement and nerves about stepping out of her comfort zone and taking on the challenge of live theater.
JoJo Dances Out of Her Comfort Zone in Broadway Debut
After years of touring the world and topping the charts with hits like “Leave (Get Out)” and “Too Little Too Late,” JoJo is embarking on a new adventure, a 14-week run on Broadway. As Satine in Moulin Rouge! The Musical, she’s ready to show off her vocal and dance skills in a glittering extravaganza.
Born Joanna Levesque, JoJo is a powerhouse vocalist who has been performing since she was just six years old. She’s appeared in films like Aquamarine and RV, but her true passion has always been music. Now, she’s taking on a new challenge, Broadway.
“I really wanted to step up to a challenge, and that’s what I think Broadway is, it’s the best of the best,” JoJo said. “These costumes, honey, are insane. They’re tailored within an inch of my life. I feel like Jessica Rabbit!”
Playing Satine in Moulin Rouge! is a dream come true for JoJo, who’s a fan of the film since childhood. After a successful audition, she then began rehearsing the songs with her vocal coach, and working with an acting coach.
JoJo Has Been Seeking Assistance to Improve Her Nerves
Despite having more than 20 years of experience performing concerts around the world, JoJo admits she’s encountered nerves throughout the rehearsal process. She’s been seeking advice from fellow castmates Derek Klena and Sophie Carmen Jones, who play Satine’s love interests Christian and Nini, respectively. She’s also received guidance from friend Ashley Loren, who preceded her as Satine.
“When I’m touring, it’s me, two background singers at most, and a few band members,” she says. “But with this, there are dozens of people on stage, and we’re equal parts of the puzzle.”
As JoJo steps into the role of Satine, she’s looking forward to belting out the show’s high-energy pop songs. Living in New York City and starring in Moulin Rouge! The Musical will also provide great fodder for an upcoming memoir JoJo’s currently writing. Which will certainly already be jam-packed with stories about child stardom and record label drama.
