Television personality John Oliver took a few digs at The Voice during a recent episode of his HBO show Last Week Tonight. He even gave longtime coach Blake Shelton a new nickname as he joked about the show.

Oliver’s new episode was about homeowners associations. While sharing the story of a woman who was fined for the color of her shutters and then fined again for taking those shutters down, the host brought up The Voice.
“It’s one of those situations where no matter what you do, you lose,” Oliver said. “Sort of like going on The Voice. Sure, there are technically winners, but name a single one. This show has been on for a conservative 50 years, and not a single winner is a household name.”
He went on to give Shelton a nickname, saying, “Seriously, tell me the first and last name of just one winner. You can’t. No one can. Not even Honky Tonk Frankenstein can do it.”
The show put up a photo of Shelton on The Voice as Oliver said this, making the audience laugh. Even Oliver couldn’t keep a straight face as he delivered the joke.

Shelton Admits the Show Doesn’t Make People Famous
Contrary to Oliver’s statement, plenty of The Voice fans could name people who have won the show. However, people who don’t watch the series would likely have a hard time doing the same. Talent shows don’t exactly create household names these days.
Even Shelton, who has been on the show since Season 1 and won nine times, admitted this in an interview earlier this year. The country singer shared how much The Voice affected his career and made him more well-known.
“I’ve actually read people say, ‘The only star of The Voice they ever found was Blake Shelton,'” the coach said in an interview with Today ahead of his final season. “It is what it is, America.”
Despite the digs, The Voice is airing its 23rd season on NBC, with new coaches Niall Horan and Chance the Rapper. The show is currently taking a week off, but it will return next Monday night for the Knockouts.
