John Legend Releases Emotionally Striking New Single “Don’t Need to Sleep”

John Legend is hopeful and wide awake. The soul music superstar recently dropped a brand-new song titled “Don’t Need to Sleep.” This single appears in the new documentary We Dare to Dream.

Co-written with Justin Tranter and producer Oak Felder, “Don’t Need to Sleep” is featured in Waad Al-Kateab’s recently released documentary. Legend produced We Dare to Dream alongside actress Angelina Jolie.
“But tonight/I don’t need to close my eyes / I don’t need to fall asleep / I don’t need to sleep to dream no I don’t,” Legend sings. “Bent but not broken / Down but not hopeless / Eyes are wide open I know it / Don’t need to sleep to dream.”
The single marks Legend’s first release since he put out his 2022 album, Legend. In early 2023, the R&B singer appeared on music collaborations with Niall Horan and Rufus Wainwright.
We Dare to Dream is an original documentary narrating the story of refugee athletes from Iran, Syria, South Sudan and Cameroon. The film follows the players and their journey to the summer Olympics. As they fight for the chance of a bright future, the documentary reveals challenges they have to overcome before success.
“Spanning a breadth of backgrounds, personal stories and Olympic sports, the film reveals their lives and hopes as they train to compete on the world stage, showing the fire and the drive of young people forced to leave their families, homes and countries of birth to build new lives out of nothing,” a synopsis for the film reads.

Alongside its emotional and soulful lyrics, the song was further made special by its piano accompaniment.
