This season on The Voice, John Legend has taken singers backstage to take part in his video series, Trailer Talk. Within this series, Legend hosts an online talk show with a special guest. In recent videos, he’s had Chris Martin from Coldplay and Carrie Underwood. Most recently, Team Legend member Jershika Maple appeared on the show.

Within this episode of Trailer Talk, Legend talked to Jershika about her origins in music. Many fans of The Voice already knew that Jershika was loyal to her church, but she goes in depth with her history in Liberty Christian Center in Killeen, Texas. The singer began in the children’s choir at five years old. To this day, she is the worship leader at Liberty Christian Center, and has been for seven years.

During the Top 5 on The Voice, Jershika dedicated her performance to her church community. She sang Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Goin’ Down” and shared she received an outpour of love following the performance.

“My first lady actually reached out to me today. many people were saying how sweet the letter was and it was just so meaningful,” Jershika said. “I was just so thankful to them because without them and their support and prayers I honestly don’t think I would’ve made it this far.”

Jershika shared that her church’s outpour of love was what made her feel less lonely during the weeks of the competition. Even though she was far away from her home, her community was still there for her.

Jershika Sings on Final Trailer Talk Episode

Later in the episode, Legend shared that this video was recorded the night of the finale. He mentioned that they were going to sing “Believe For It” by CeCe Winans on Trailer Talk, but would be singing “O Holy Night” on the competition show. Both the singer and her coach sounded amazing in this recorded performance.

Personally, I wish they would’ve sang this song on The Voice stage. I think this performance was way stronger than the one we saw during The Voice finale. I’m really hoping that this collab means there’s more to come in Jershika’s future. She had a hard run on the series, but has a great chance at finding success as a Christian music star.

Jershika won fifth place on season 21 of The Voice. She premiered powerhouse vocals throughout the season and truly only got better each week. On top of always being good, she put up a fight for her spot in the finale. America instantly saved her twice and never regretted it.

Even though Jershikia didn’t win the series as a whole, she’s gained a loyal fan base since the show. Jershika recently shared on her Instagram story that an album and tour are in the works for the upcoming new year.
