Jeannie Mai Withdraws From ‘Dancing With The Stars’ After Scary Hospitalization

Jeannie Mai has been a fan-favorite this season of Dancing With The Stars with her partner Brandon Armstrong. Each week she has continued to impress the judges, however, her journey on the show has abruptly come to an end. She announced that she has been hospitalized for an inflammatory condition called epiglottis. This has forced her to withdraw from the competition because she needs surgery.
Jeannie Mai Has Withdrawn From ‘Dancing With Stars’ After Scary Diagnosis
“It saddens me that I will not be able to continue with the competition on ‘DWTS,'” she said in a statement to People. “My doctors discovered a health concern with my throat which requires immediate attention and surgery.”
Good Morning America first confirmed the news of Jeannie’s scary diagnosis that can cause swelling and blocked airflow to the lungs. “I am heartbroken that my ‘DWTS’ journey has to end here,” she said in a statement. “The last several weeks have been an amazing learning experience. I have pushed myself to new limits physically and mentally, and I am so proud of how far we’ve come.”

“I can’t thank my partner Brandon enough for being so supportive and believing in me” Jeannie continued. “I also want to thank MAI fans who voted every week and I wish everyone else in the competition the best of luck!”
Brandon said “We are devastated by the news that we’re gonna have to cut this season short, but Jeannie’s health does come first. Thank you to all the fans that have helped to get us this far and we are praying for a speedy recovery for Jeannie.” He also posted a sweet message dedicated to Jeannie and their time on the show together.
What Does Jeannie’s Exit Mean For The Remaining Competitors?
Tonight’s episode of Dancing With The Stars was supposed to a double elimination. Since Jeannie is leaving the show, only one couple will be eliminated tonight according to ‘GMA.’ the dance relay that was planned for tonight’s episode is still going to take place. Multiple couples are set to dance to the same songs. One judge will be scoring that particular set of contestants.
Last week Brandon and Jeannie ended up in the bottom two for the first time but the judges chose to save them over Monica Aldama and Val Chmerkovskiy. The judges were excited to see Jeannie continue on in her dancing journey.
The contestants that are left in the competition are Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean, Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, Selling Sunset’s Chrishell Stause, rapper Nelly, actress Justina Machado, Catfish host Nev Schulman, Disney star Skai Jackson, and The Bachelorette‘s Kaitlyn Bristowe.
