Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have always stood up for what they believe in. We’ve seen that over the past month during the fallout from Gabrielle’s America’s Got Talent ouster, but now with Dwyane standing by using his son’s preferred pronouns when referring to him people are starting to take more and more notice. And they should since this is hardly a new thing for the power couple!
Standing Up for their child
In a recent interview on the podcast All The Smoke, Dwyane used the pronoun “she” in reference to teenage son Zion:
“I had to look myself in the mirror and say, ‘What if your son come home and tell you he’s gay? What are you going to do? How are you going to be? How are you going to act? It ain’t about him. He knows who he is. It’s about you. Who are you?'” Wade recalled. “… I watched my son, from day one, become into who she now eventually come into. And for me it’s all about nothing changes with my love. Nothing changes in my responsibilities. So, the only thing I had to do now is get smarter educate myself more. And that’s my job.”
A few weeks ago, Gabrielle posted a photo featuring Zion with a fancy-looking manicure on her Instagram page in celebration of Thanksgiving…
Trolling commenters came after the family, but Dwyane took to Twitter and fought back.
Filled With Pride
Earlier this year, Gabrielle attended the Miami Pride Parade with three of the kids in the family, including Zion. She later explained why the event was so important for the family, saying that “People talk a lot about diversity and inclusion, but they don’t actually mean it,” she continued. “In our household, we mean that, and that’s why the entire household went to pride.”
But Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union’s activism goes beyond their own family. They designed a limited-edition Pride t-shirt (as seen in the photo above) with 50% of the proceeds plus an addition $50,000 to GLSEN, an organization dedicated to helping protect LGBT+ students. When the project was launched, Gabrielle made a statement saying “As a family, we believe inclusion and equality are two essential pillars needed to move towards growth and progressive thinking and action in our society.”
Dwayne Wade and his family have gotten plenty of pushback for their strong LGBT+ support, but it’s great to see them remain firm in their commitment to standing up for the community, especially since their son is a part of it.
