UFC star Jon Jones has reportedly been arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico. According to ESPN, the MMA fighter was charged with aggravated DWI and negligent use of a firearm early Thursday morning.

Jon is also charged with possession of an open container and no proof of insurance. Read on to find out more details about the circumstances surrounding Jon’s arrest, as well as what the UFC said about it in a statement.

Why Was UFC Fighter Jon Jones Arrested?

Police reportedly responded to reports of a gunshot at about 12:58 am on Thursday morning. The officer apparently saw an open bottle of alcohol behind the passenger seat in Jon’s car.

Jon reportedly admitted to having driven and intending to drive again. He “performed poorly” on three field sobriety tests. He was also given a breathalyzer and tested “at or above twice the legal limit.”

Although Jon denied knowing where the gunshot came from, a search of his Jeep found a handgun under the driver’s seat, with a spent round outside the driver’s side door, matching the caliber of the gun. The gun will reportedly be tested to see if it matches with any crimes.

In February, Jon posted a video on his Instagram (above) in which he can be seen looking at guns at HTX Tactical gun shop. He posted another video from around the same time in which he fires a gun at a shooting range.

What Did The UFC Have To Say About The Arrest?

Jon Jones first became the light heavyweight champion in 2011, when he was 23 years old. He was the youngest belt holder in UFC history. Now 32, Jon has a history of legal trouble.

This is Jon’s second DWI. His first was in New York in 2012, after driving into a pole. In 2015, he tested positive for cocaine and checked into rehab for a night. Also in 2015, he was convicted of a felony hit-and-run that injured a pregnant woman and was on probation until 2018. Last July, he was charged with battery against a strip club waitress.

The UFC issued a statement regarding Jon Jones’ most recent arrest, saying they were “aware of the situation” and had contacted Jones’ management team. They added that they were “currently gathering additional information.”
