Gabby Barrett took home the Breakthrough Video of The Year award at the 2020 CMT Music Awards. After the success of her song “I Hope,” Gabby was presented with the award by Taylor Swift who won it 13 years ago. But Gabby continues the streak for American Idol contestants who have gone on to take home the award and have major country music careers.

‘American Idol’ Alum Gabby Barrett Wins Big At The CMT Music Awards

Taylor previously won the award for her song Tim McGraw in 2007. That same year, American Idol winner Carrie Underwood dominated most major award categories with her smash hit “Before He Cheats.” But this year was all about the rising young talent that is Gabby Barrett. Taylor made a rare appearance on the show virtually much to the delight of her fans and Gabby herself. The “Cardigan” singer has been very lowkey amid the pandemic.

“That’s amazing! Oh my gosh. Okay, I don’t even know what to say because I didn’t really think that I was going to win. But first, oh my gosh, my fake trophy in my hand right here, I would like to thank my Lord and savior Jesus Christ, because I wouldn’t be able to be doing what I love every single day without Him. So thank you, Lord,” Gabby said in her speech accepting the award remotely.

“Secondly, all the fans that voted, thank you so much” she continued. “That’s something that I really loved about country music coming into it was how loyal the fanbases are and how they just incredibly love the people that they love, so thank you guys so much. I would like to thank my husband, my family back in Pittsburgh, my entire team … I’m so new to this, this is my first time receiving a television award, so thank you so much CMT.”

Gabby is expecting her first child with her husband and fellow American Idol Alum Cade Foehner. They performed the song during the show with Cade playing the guitar.

Gabby Continues The Streak Of ‘Idol’ Contestants Dominating This Awards Category

Gabby is just one of the many former American Idol contestants that has gone on to win this major award. Previously in 2006, Carrie won the Breakthrough Video of The Year honor at the CMT Music Awards with the song “Jesus, Take The Wheel.” After Taylor won the award in 2007, sixth place American Idol contestant Kellie Pickler won the award with her song “I Wonder” in 2008.

In 2010, current American Idol judge Luke Bryan won the honor with his song “Do I.” In 2012, American Idol winner Scotty McCreery took home the award with his song “The Trouble With Girls.” The runner-up of his season, Lauren Alaina ended up winning it in 2017 with “Road Less Traveled.”

And it’s not like these ‘Idol’ alums don’t have big competition against them each year at the CMT Music Awards. Taylor is always a huge name thrown into the mix along with stars like Keith Urban and Blake Shelton who are always nominated. But it is pretty safe to say that American Idol produces some of the biggest names in country music.
