Sunday night’s new episode of American Idol will look a little different, as judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie will be busy performing at King Charles’ coronation concert in the UK. In their place, Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran will fill in as guest judges.

Guest Judges Announced for Next American Idol

During Monday night’s new episode, American Idol announced next week’s guest judges, as well as what we can expect from the Top 8’s performances. First, we learned that Morissette would be joining the panel alongside regular judge Luke Bryan.

Not only will she be judging the performances, but she’ll also be mentoring the contestants as they prepare to sing covers of her songs. As the singer shared in a video announcing her appearance, “I can’t wait to hear them.”

Then we found out that the other guest judge appearing on Sunday’s show will be Sheeran. The Top 8 will be pairing up to perform duets of Sheeran’s songs. As Sheeran said, “I can’t wait to guide you through this stage of the competition and career.”

During Sunday’s show, viewers at home will be voting live coast to coast to decide which singers should make it into the Top 5. The competition is heating up as we get closer and closer to the finale.

The Top 8 Has Been Revealed This Season

During Monday night’s show, the Top 10 took the stage to perform songs chosen by the judges. At the end of the night, the Top 8 was revealed, according to America’s vote and judge Katy Perry’s save. (Perry won the Judge’s Song Contest, with four out of 10 contestants choosing her song suggestions.)

The Top 8 was announced to be Megan Danielle, Haven Madison, Warren Peay, Wé Ani, Colin Stough, Iam Tongi, Zachariah Smith, and Oliver Steele. That meant that Marybeth Byrd and Platinum Ticket winner Tyson Venegas were eliminated.

The Season 21 finale is currently scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 21. It will feature appearances from Season 2 winner and runner-up Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken on the 20th anniversary of their own finale show.
