‘DWTS’ Season 30 Costumes Go From Just Okay, to Blowing Us Away

Reading Time: 3 minutes

After the first episode of Dancing With the Stars, I was a bit worried about the future of this season. I felt like the outfits in the first few weeks of the series were underwhelming. They weren’t very flashy, they were just kind of average. Since Britney Week however, the wardrobe department has been creating some absolutely amazing looks.

In the first week of the series, we saw a bunch of solid, bright colored outfits. There’s definitely nothing wrong with them, but it was weird that the couples’ outfits were so underwhelming the first episode. Even the outfits that were a little more done up weren’t even close to the best looks of previous seasons.

I would’ve liked to see the celebrities in flashier costuming during week one. Their outfits were pretty average and didn’t feel worthy of Dancing With the Stars. Anyone who’s seen this show knows just how extra it can be… so I expect the same out of their outfits! Luckily, I felt like the costuming began to get better once the series hit their themed nights.

Dancing With the Stars fans began to see more complex costuming during Britney Night (week three) and it hasn’t stopped there. The designers nailed Britney Night with fun patterns, revealing wardrobes, and a love and appreciation of Britney Spears as a whole.

Since Britney Night, the designers have put couples in more “Dancing With the Stars worthy” costumes. Suddenly, outfits began to feel flashy, put together and all around better.

Let’s Talk About Tyra Banks

At one point I think we all were questioning how much of the Dancing With the Stars budget the host got for costuming. During the second week of the competition Tyra Banks premiered a few questionable outfit choices on the series. Although this resulted in major social media heat and funny memes, I think DWTS realized her fashion sense was a lot to keep up with.

All season, Banks has changed outfits mid episode, but never into something as daring as her now-infamous big red fan dress. Even though this runway model is given numerous outfits per episode, I don’t think it’s her budget that pulled the rest of the costume department down in the first first weeks.

I think the costume department played the first few weeks safe because they didn’t know what their stars would be comfortable dancing in. Instead of having them dive deep into the world of gemstones and leotards, they gave the celebrities a week to feel it out and see what they would actually prefer to wear. As the competition has gotten closer to the end, the outfits have gotten so much better, in the best way possible. Last week’s outfits were some of my favorites yet!

Tonight, Dancing with the Stars heads into the semifinals at 8 p.m. ET. The top six couples will compete before a double elimination that will take us into next week’s finals.
