Dancing with the Stars pro Jenna Johnson recently opened up about the miscarriage she experienced before welcoming her son Rome with husband Val Chmerkovskiy earlier this year. Johnson said it sent her into a “deep depression.”
Jenna Johnson Opens Up About Her Miscarriage
During an appearance on the Momforce podcast, Johnson shared the story of her miscarriage. As she and Chmerkovskiy were rehearsing for an event in Dallas, she realized she was bleeding and ran back to their hotel room. She said she felt “so helpless” in that moment.
Johnson said she hadn’t heard many people speak publicly about their miscarriage experiences. She started watching YouTube videos about it, and she realized that it’s “so common.” She also heard from people in her own life who had experience with it.
“It just became so apparent to me I am not alone in this, and this is something that needs to be spoken about,” Johnson said. “Because all of the feelings that I had felt, all of that trauma, all of that darkness, it put me into a deep depression for about eight months. It really did. It just needs to be talked about.”
She added that she chose to keep the story to herself until she became pregnant again. It ended up happening when she wasn’t expecting it. Then in January, she gave birth to her son Rome.

Johnson Wants People to Stop Asking About Kids
Host Vanessa Quigley asked Johnson her advice for people who want to support friends who are going through something like a miscarriage. The dancer said she thinks people should stop asking when couples are going to have kids.
“Throw that out the window. Let’s just never ask that. So insensitive,” Johnson said, adding, “You never know. Or even just how long someone’s been trying for. It’s such a thing.”
When talking about her son, Johnson said she “didn’t know that I was capable of feeling this much love.” She said becoming a parent has “made me such a better human,” adding that she feels “more confident and powerful than I ever have before.”
