Dexter Roberts was a clear frontrunner in The Voice season 16. Since winning third place on his season, he’s continued pursuing music as a career. Here’s 10 things to know about this The Voice alum.
1. He Originally Competed on American Idol
Before ever taking The Voice stage, Dexter competed on season 13 of American Idol. He auditioned for the series in Salt Lake City, automatically impressing with his rendition of “Drive” by Casey James. Dexter placed in seventh and even went on to tour with American Idol Live following the season.
2. He Had a Record Deal
As a result of his American Idol fame, Dexter scored a record deal. The alum signed to First Launch Records and released his first EP Dream About Me in 2015. This EP remains on streaming to this day. Following this EP Dexter released another independently in 2017. This EP is titled Dexter Roberts Unplugged, Vol. 1.
3. His Health Struggle Set Him Back Musically
Dexter got candid with viewers during his confessional on The Voice. He admitted that he got really sick while in Kentucky with friends. The sickness led to a lack of appetite, bad headaches, and lack of liquid consumption. During that time he travelled throughout the United States trying to figure out what was wrong with him. At the time, he explained that his health problems led him to pause his music career.
In the end, he was diagnosed with Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick Fever. As a result of his diagnosis he had to drop out of the American Idol Live tour. The singer got candid about this issues nearly five years later while on The Voice. It was clear that he was in better health and spirits on his second competition show.
4. He Got a Four Chair Turn on The Voice
Dexter took Randy Houser’s “Like a Cowboy” to a whole new level. Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, and John Legend quickly turned their chairs to see the 27 year old country boy belt his heart out. Eventually, Adam Levine also turned his chair for the singer. The country singer ended up joining Team Blake for the season.
5. He Can Play More Than One Instrument
Fans of The Voice saw Dexter impress during a guitar solo on The Voice, but there’s more than what meets the eye. This country artist is also able to play the bass, mandolin, banjo, and the keyboard. Even though he’s able to play multiple other instruments, he’s often seen playing the acoustic guitar.
6. He Released a Single in 2022
Dexter has once again returned to country music with his latest release “Standing Knee Deep in a River.” In the recent release, he revisited his country roots with his silky smooth voice. This song was released to streaming independently under the name Anomaly Create, LLC. His other current releases “Friday Night” and “Country As Country Comes” were released under the same name.
7. He’s Still in Contact With His Coach
This country artist is among those that remain in contact with their coach following their The Voice season. He was recently seen along with his coach in March. According to his Instagram post, Dexter hung out with Shelton and Mark Wills at Ole Red in Nashville, Tennessee.
