It’s no secret that American Idol judge Katy Perry loves a costume. She dresses up every year for the show’s Disney Night, and she’s also worn some crazy looks to the Met Gala. One person who isn’t a fan of these outfits is designer Tom Ford, who recently threw shade at the pop star.
Tom Ford Disses Katy Perry’s Met Gala Looks
In an interview with Time ahead of next week’s Met Gala, Ford said he dislikes how the event has “turned into a costume party.” Without naming Perry, he went on to reference two looks that the singer wore to the 2019 event.
“That used to just be very chic people wearing very beautiful clothes going to an exhibition about the 18th century,” Ford said. “You didn’t have to look like the 18th century, you didn’t have to dress like a hamburger, you didn’t have to arrive in a van where you were standing up because you couldn’t sit down because you wore a chandelier.”
The theme of the 2019 Met Gala was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” For the red carpet, Perry wore an outfit that made her look like a chandelier. She later changed into a hamburger costume, which she brought back for Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” music video.

Perry Teases Her 2022 Look
The 2022 Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 2, with the theme “Gilded Glamour.” Despite his criticism of the event’s recent fashion choices, Ford is an honorary co-chair of the gala. Perry is expected to attend, and she recently teased her outfit to Page Six.
“It would be pretty obvious for me to go play the kooky, crazy, wild, big, fun, colorful card,” Perry said of her Met Gala reputation. “I think this time, I’m gonna play a whole different card.”
Perry went on to joke that she might wear a suit of armor on the red carpet to go along with the “gilded” theme. She then added that she might send someone in her place to wear the armor, while she sits at home in sweats.
