Dancing with the Stars judge Derek Hough and his wife Hayley Erbert are mourning the loss of a beloved family member. Hough shared in a heartfelt Instagram post that his dog Romie sadly passed away after “14 years by my side.”
Derek Hough, Hayley Erbert Mourn Loss of Dog Romie
On Sunday, Derek Hough took to Instagram to share a video of his dog Romie which featured the words, “I miss you so much already. My heart aches. Goodbye, my son. My Romie boy. I will love you forever.”
In the post’s caption, Hough wrote that Romie “came into my life when I was just trying to figure life out,” adding that he “saw me at my worst and at my best.” As Hough shared, “He loved me through it all and somehow gave me purpose when I couldn’t find it myself.”
Hough went on to write that Romie “started to get tired” in his old age, but he “asked him to hold on so he could meet his little sister,” referring to his baby daughter with wife Hayley Erbert. Hough wrote that Romie “kept his promise.”
“Waking up without him feels unreal,” Hough continued. “I keep looking at that spot where he’d usually come around the bushes, waiting, hoping. It’s strange to know he won’t come around that bend again.”

Hough’s DWTS Family Showed Their Support
Derek Hough received an outpouring of love in the comments of his post mourning Romie’s death. His wife Hayley Erbert wrote that he was “the best dad to him,” adding, “I love you and will be forever grateful you brought him into my life.”
Former DWTS host Tom Bergeron also commented, recalling a time when he took a day off from work to mourn his dog, and his boss “didn’t get it.” As Bergeron wrote, “Anyone who has ever loved a dog would understand immediately. Sorry for your loss, my friend. I definitely get it.”
Hough’s sister Julianne wrote, “Wrapping you in love.” Several other DWTS pros and contestants also left their condolences in the comments. Season 35 contestant Jenna Dewan wrote, “Romie is your angel spirit now, still with you.”
