Demi Lovato Goes “Sober Sober” After Three Years “California Sober”

Today, Demi Lovato posted an Instagram story announcing that they are now fully sober. The famous singer made waves the past three years declaring themself “California Sober.” Fans are happy to see Lovato taking a step to be completely sober after their life-changing 2018 overdose.
What is ‘California Sober’?
Lovato has officially hung up their hat on being a ‘California Sober‘ celebrity. Being ‘California Sober’ means that they laid off of the opioid use, but still drank alcohol and smoked marijuana. This is not the typical approach to sobriety, but it was the method Lovato felt comfortable with it at the time.
“I think the term that I best identify with is ‘California sober.’ I really don’t feel comfortable explaining the parameters of my recovery to people, because I don’t want anyone to look at my parameters of safety and think that’s what works for them, because it might not,” Lovato said in August. “I am cautious to say that, just like I feel the complete abstinent method isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for everybody, I don’t think that this journey of moderation is a one-size-fits-all solution for everybody.”
This original decision was met with harsh criticism by both the singer’s fans and friends. Many people would’ve rather seen this celebrity face total sobriety, but Lovato explained their reasoning.
“Telling myself that I can never have a drink or smoke marijuana, I feel like that’s setting myself up for failure because I am such a black and white thinker,” said Lovato.
The singer shared that they have it drilled into their head that one drink is equivalent to a crack pipe, so they were going to continue marijuana use in moderation. At the time of this decision they were extremely confident that it was the best approach for them. She even wrote a song about it.
Demi Lovato Quits ‘California Sober’ Habits
It’s apparent that after three years, the ‘California Sober’ approach is no longer the lifestyle that Lovato wants to live. On December 2, they shared an Instagram post confirming that they put an end to this lifestyle.
“I no longer support my ‘California Sober’ ways,” Lovato wrote on their Instagram story. “Sober sober is the only way to be.”
Lovato’s instagram announcement doesn’t explain why they have moved to full sobriety. While we hope Lovato hasn’t run into hardships that lead to this discovery, we’re happy to hear that they will be doing the best for them. We hope only the best for this singer on their sobriety journey.
