Like many queer people, pop superstar Demi Lovato has their own version of a coming out story. The “Heart Attack” hitmaker recently shared how they revealed their sexuality to their parents, noting that their mom cried out of joy, upon the confession.

Demi Lovato Opens Up About Coming Out to Their Parents

In a recent interview with SiriusXM, Lovato candidly stated that blurting out their sexuality, even to their parents, wasn’t an immediate decision. Coming from a “Christian background,” the “Really Don’t Care” performer has refused to tell people unless they’re comfortable with it.

“It took me until I was 25 to come out to my mom. At the time I was bisexual and then I realized I was pansexual. It took me a while,” they said.

Prior to coming out to their mom and stepdad, they released their 2015 track “Cool for the Summer.” While laughing, the singer noted that the song includes “very obvious” lyrics such as “Got a taste for the cherry I just need to take a bite.”

“One day I was about to go to a show. I was sitting on a plane and I was with my stepdad, who’s basically my dad, and I was like, ‘Hey, I need to tell you something,'” they said. “I was like, ‘I like girls too.’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, I know. You have ‘Cool for the Summer‘ out.'”

Eventually, Lovato figured out that they needed to tell the truth to their mom. Luckily, their mother had a similar, happy, reaction.

“I was getting ready to go on a date with a girl, and I didn’t know if I would be photographed or what would happen and I really liked this girl. [I] was like, ‘I think it’s time to tell my mom in case it becomes serious,'” they said. “I sat my mom down and I was like, ‘I need to talk to you.’ I said, ‘I am about to go on a date with a girl and I just wanted you to know and hear it from me that I do like girls too.’ she just almost started crying and was like, ‘I just want you to be happy.'”

According to the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer, their mom’s reaction was “so valuable and so appreciated.” Lovato accounts such feeling with how many parents don’t respond the same way.

They Emphasize the Importance of Providing Safe Spaces for Queers

Grateful for their parents’ support and acceptance, Lovato feels that they must give the same energy to fellow queer people. Additionally, they underscored the significance of having a safe space for the members of the LGBTQ+ community.

“That’s why I post on social media all the time about being queer and what it means and things that are in the public eye, what’s going on, current events,” they said.

For those who may not know, Lovato initially identified themself as queer sin July 2020. They eventually came out as pansexual and sexually fluid in March 2021.
