Demi Lovato Identifies as Non-Binary with New Pronouns
“I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression, and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering,” Lovato said in the video.
Lovato spoke with their friend Alok Vaid-Menon on the podcast, a performer and author that has inspired them on their own personal journey. The pair met through singer Sam Smith. Smith convinced Lovato to attend Alok’s poetry show in Los Angeles when Lovato had curiosities about identifying as non-binary. Finally, they realized being non-binary was their “truth.”
“This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work,” they wrote on their Instagram post. “I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me.”
New episodes of 4D with Demi Lovato will be out every Wednesday with special guests who will all be sharing their own personal stories. A trailer for the podcast was posted on Lovato’s YouTube channel along with the very first episode with Alok. They got candid about suppressing their feelings throughout the past few years of their career.
“In 2018 when I overdosed I feel like the reason why that happened was because I was ignoring my truth and I was suppressing who I am in order to please stylists or team members or even fans that wanted me to be the sexy feminine pop star and look a certain way,” Lovato admitted during the podcast.
Lovato previously opened up about their near-fatal drug overdose in the docuseries Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil.
