‘Dancing With The Stars’: Jeannie Mai’s Withdrawal Changes The Rules
Dancing with the Stars Season 29 continued on Monday night with the eighth week of competition. This week, the couples each danced twice. That included a relay dance in which the couples danced back to back in groups of two or three, for a chance at bonus points.
This week was meant to have a double elimination, but plans changed after Jeannie Mai withdrew from the competition. Jeannie shared a video from her hospital bed explaining that she had to have emergency surgery for a throat abscess. Tyra Banks got emotional talking about Jeannie’s absence, saying she’s “still a part of this family.”
Because of Jeannie’s withdrawal, only one couple was eliminated this week. Check out the week’s performances in the videos below, and read on to find out who went home.
‘Dancing With The Stars’: Watch This Week’s Performances
Kaitlyn Bristowe & Artem Chigvintsev
This couple started off by dancing the jive to “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen. Bruno Tonioli said he wanted “more passion” from Kaitlyn in the future. Carrie Ann said it was “one of your better performances,” but called them out for a lift.
Nev Schulman & Jenna Johnson
Nev earned the first perfect score of the season last week. This week, he and Jenna danced the Viennese waltz to “Stuck With You.” Bruno said he oozed “charm and charisma.” Carrie Ann said he had a stumble, but called it a “beautiful performance.”
Justina Machado & Sasha Farber
This pair danced the samba, with Justina dedicating the performance to her One Day at a Time co-star Rita Moreno. Derek Hough advised Justina to “articulate” her feet more, but said she was “fun to watch.” Bruno called it “brilliant.”
Nelly & Daniella Karagach
Nelly dedicated this week’s rumba performance to his sister, who died of leukemia. Bruno said Nelly needed to drag his feet instead of stepping. Carrie Ann said he was too focused on his upper half and not his hips, but he said he dances from his heart.
Chrishell Stause & Gleb Savchenko
This pair danced the Viennese waltz to Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain.” Carrie Ann called it “graceful and elegant,” but told Chrishell to watch her arm and neck. Derek and Bruno loved how sexy the performance was.
Skai Jackson & Alan Bersten
This pair danced the salsa to Missy Elliott. Carrie Ann said she liked how “aggressive” Skai was, but said she didn’t nail the landings on her lifts. Derek said there might have been too many lifts.
Johnny Weir & Britt Stewart
This pair danced the foxtrot to Shawn Mendes. Derek questioned whether he should have worn such short pants for the dance, but Carrie Ann said she loved the “fashion choice.” She also said she liked the “jerky” style of the dance.
AJ McLean & Cheryl Burke
AJ spoke honestly about his struggles with addiction before dancing the rumba to “Way Down We Go.” Bruno said he was “captivated” by the performance, praising their storytelling. However, he and Carrie Ann agreed that there wasn’t enough rumba in it.
