Camila Cabello Misidentifies The Voice Contestant as Shawn Mendes

The Voice contestant Tanner Howe sang “Mercy” by Shawn Mendes to impress the coaches in his blind audition. Apparently, Camila Cabello wasn’t simply awed, but also shocked how similar his voice is with her ex-boyfriend’s.

To those who do not know, Cabello and Mendes were once a huge Hollywood couple. The two met during Austin Mahone’s tour and began dating in 2018. Unfortunately, they saw their relationship becoming “stale and complacent,” so they decided to call it quits late 2021. Despite the painful split, the two separated without any personal vendetta against each other.

Upon hearing the music’s introduction, Cabello can be seen smiling. When Tanner sang the first two verses of the song, the “Havana” singer was taken aback.

“Is that my—is that Shawn up there?” Cabello asked. “I thought that was Shawn.”

Blake Shelton turned for Tanner, followed by Gwen Stefani and John Legend. Cabello, however, didn’t swing for him.

She Didn’t Turn Her Chair For The Singer

Cabello started the conversation by congratulating Tanner. She then continued to comment on the performance, stating that she could’ve sworn it was Mendes singing. Tanner clearly had no hard feelings, since their relationship was publicly seen as serious.

Although Cabello’s acknowledgement of Mendes’s song and style is good, she decided it wasn’t good enough to turn her chair. Within the episode, she explained that Tanner sounded “a little bit too much like him.”

Even though the singer claims that he sees himself in the same musical lane, Cabello made it known that she would rather see his rendition. She clearly would’ve preferred his personal style, over the Mendes tribute they received. Before the next coach discussed his talent, Cabello cracked one last joke.

“I was in his lane, deeply,” she said.

Since the joke was out of context, the audience bursted out in laughter and the coaches were left confused. Taken out of context, there could definitely be some type of sexual innuendo.

“She said it. We heard it,” Shelton bantered.

Meanwhile, Legend stated that she was trying to make the moment as awkward a possible. Cabello eventually cut the quick comedy and told the coaches proceed with convincing Tanner.

In the end, Tanner picked Stefani as his coach. The Voice airs on Mondays and Tuesdays, at 8 pm ET/PT on NBC.
