For the past months, the bridge of Harry Styles’ “As It Was” has become a heated debate between his American and international fans. However, just recently, the singer appeared to have sided his American supporters upon changing his own lyrics to the song. This has apparently left his international fans, most especially British fans, felt betrayed.

For those who may not know, Styles was born and raised in United Kingdom. He spent a large part of his childhood in the small village of Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, England. In 2020, he placed third in The X Factor with Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson.

Exponential success followed afterwards, until One Direction disbanded in 2016. Be that as it may, Styles has pursued an impressive individual career, accumulating supporters not only from the UK but also in different places abroad. With that, the singer has failed to spend much time in his root country.

Harry Styles’ US, UK Fans Battle Over “As It Was”

Currently, Styles is embarking on the second half of Love on Tour, his 167-date and seven-leg concert series that started back in 2021. The finale of the concert series will be on July 2023, ending the celebration of his second and third studio albums.

Love on Tour consists of deeply felt performances of some of his well-recognized love songs. His 2022 smash hit “As It Was” is of course never left unsung, all the while proving to be a worthy debate for his fans. Specifically, fans are fighting over its lyrics: “Leave America, two kids follow her.”

Since its release, “As It Was” has become a way for Styles’ fans in the UK to tell him to go back to his home country. Since this was a thing, Styles’ fans were screaming their lungs out during the “leave America” part of the song.

The former One Direction member eventually stopped singing “leave America” in front of his British fans, knowing they would only yell at him. Amusingly, in the US, fans go silent over “leave America” portion.

Fans Criticize The Singer for Sneaky Lyric Change

Over a week ago, when he returned to stage in Los Angeles to resume the tour, Styles decided to further stir the pot. On his third night at the Kia Forum, Styles twisted “As It Was”, singing “never leave America” instead of its original lyrics. Expectedly, this has disappointed and somehow enraged his British fans.

According to them, they’ve felt betrayed by the artist, most especially that he is “from our own kind.” Furthermore, one fan declared that the UK vs. America issue has made them like Styles less.

“I didn’t think Harry could ever give me the ick but last night’s ‘never leave America’ really did it for me,” one person wrote.

Other fans think that Styles should be “humbled” after the lyrics change. Yet, there were also others who think that the singer was just joking about it.

As of writing, Styles has not responded to harsh criticisms thrown at him. Meanwhile, he will continue Love on Tour on February 20, at HBF Park in Perth, Australia.

Fans who are so emotionally invested in a performer perhaps need medical help. I truly feel sorry for them.
