One of the things that’s always been true of American Idol is that they have always stayed away from hip hop music. That’s because the show has always looked for pure vocalists. Sure, they might let Catie Turner beatbox a little but that’s about it. But when Jurnee rapped last night on American Idol, it was a real first.
One of the things that The Four sold itself on was that all forms of American popular music were welcome from country to hip hop. That’s one of the things that made that show so unique. But as far as American Idol goes, it is sticking to the trinity pop, R&B, and country with a tiny bit of rock thrown in. Jurnee, in her performance of Bang, Bang, rapped the Nicki Minaj parts. Not only did she do it extremely well, she broke new ground on the show.
Does that mean that there is going to be a slew of rappers coming on the show dropping rhymes? Doubtful. American Idol is still a very mainstream pop based show. Still, it was nice to see them mix things up a bit. Say what you want about the reboot of Idol, it has been innovative.
