Ariana Grande Debuts ‘Thank U Next’ Button Against John Legend

John Legend

“Thank U Next” is a catchphrase almost everyone knows at this point. Unfortunately for John Legend, he got to know the catchphrase a bit better than anyone else tonight. Ariana Grande was given the “Thank U Next” buzzer as a tactic to help her talk when the arguments are getting loud on The Voice this season.

Grande debuted her “Thank U Next” button when the coaches began to fight over the 35 year-old contestant, Katie Rae Mortimer. As soon as Legend said something she didn’t like, she hit the button to get him to stop talking.

Mortimer sang her version of Maren Morris’s “The Bones.” She seriously got so much of the coaches attention that she had them arguing over her. During this argument, Grande knew she had to get her point across, so she debuted her “Thank U Next” button to get the attention of the other coaches.

Katie Rae Mortimer Joins Team Ariana

Grande tried to make up for the fact that Mortimer and Clarkson bonded over their children. But it was Legend’s argument that really moved Grande’s hand toward the buzzer. As soon as he began really fighting for the 35 year-old singer, “Thank U Next” echoed around the room.

Grande’s game plan worked. She made it show Mortimer really listened to her, and eventually chose her team. Mortimer was soon announced as the first member of Team Ariana, and was the first recipient of Grande’s coach gift of the season.

Legend later hinted that he might not be giving his traditional gift to his members this year. This will be the first season of The Voice where he doesn’t sing a song to the contestants to get him to join Team Legend. This was absolutely insane to hear out of his mouth since he loved singing to his team members!
