Live‘s Encore contest allowed fans at home to vote for which American Idol contestant they wanted to see perform on the show, not counting the winner and runner-up. Stough won the vote, and he appeared on the show Tuesday.

Stough took the stage to perform “I Still Talk to Jesus,” which he released as part of his time on Idol. The 18-year-old sat on a stool and strummed his guitar in front of a screen showing a beach scene. At one point, Stough appeared to make a minor mistake but laughed it off before continuing to sing.

“I know I’m better off without you / But I hate knowing it’s the same for you,” Stough sings on the song’s chorus. “I tell myself that I still need it / I just want something to believe in / I still talk to Jesus.”

Stough finished Season 21 in third place, behind runner-up Megan Danielle and winner Iam Tongi. His loss caused a bit of backlash from fans online, some of whom accused the show of rigging the results. So it’s no surprise that the public voted him as the Encore winner.

Stough Reacts to Visiting New York City

After his performance, Stough chatted with hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, sharing that his hometown in Mississippi has about 70 people. He visited New York City for the first time to appear on the show.

“Well, there’s one caution light in Gatman,” Stough said when asked what he thinks about the city. “I don’t know, it’s everything here. It’s crazy. It’s definitely a big change.”

Ripa went on to remind everyone that American Idol judge Katy Perry referred to Stough as “the Brad Pitt of country music.” The show even put up a side-by-side comparison with Pitt’s role in Thelma & Louise, in which he wore a cowboy hat.

Stough joked that people have told him, “If music don’t work out, just go be his stunt double.”
