American Idol season two star Clay Aiken plays the lead in The Drowsy Chaperone at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera (CLO). Don’t miss your chance to see this show on their short theatre stay.

Clay Aiken is returning to the world of musical theatre for a short time this June. He will appear in The Drowsy Chaperone as Man in Chair at the Pittsburgh CLO. The Drowsy Chaperone is described as a love letter to the Jazz Age. It features a die-hard theater fan playing his favorite album while the characters come alive around him. The show features one show-stopping song and dance number after another.

The first look at the show portrays just how fun this musical is. Aiken’s enthusiasm as Man in Chair is met with several zany characters. Even though the first look is short, this show looks like a must-see at Pittsburgh CLO.

The 1920’s based show has won five Tony Awards since it’s Broadway debut in 2006. The most notable Tony Awards include “Best Original Score” and “Best Book of a Musical.” The Drowsy Chaperone opened on Broadway in May 2006 at the Marquis Theatre and closed in December 2007 after 674 performances and 32 previews.

The Drowsy Chaperone is showing at Pittsburgh CLO from June 21 through the 26. Ticket prices range from $29 to $85.

Clay Aiken Stars in Pittsburgh CLO’s production of The Drowsy Chaperone

Many theatre fans remember Aiken from Pittsburgh CLO’s 2019 production of Grease, where he played the character Teen Angel. Ahead of Grease, Aiken made his Broadway debut as part of the cast of Monty Python’s Spamalot in 2008. He later returned to the stage alongside American Idol alum, Ruben Studdard in Ruben and Aiken’s first annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show at the Imperial Theater.

Aiken is joined in this production by host of TLC’s and Discovery’s Trading Spaces, Paige Davis. Davis is recognized by audiences from her starring role in Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating, Mating, and Marriage at the CLO Cabaret, or as Maria in The Sound of Music. This performer made her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago and later appeared as Gloria in the revival of Boeing-Boeing.

Aiken gained national recognition from American Idol and ultimately became the first from the series to debut a single at No. 1 on the Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart. His album, Measure Of a Man, also debut at No. 1 and made history with the highest first week sales by a debut artist.

This move is a bit of surprise from Aiken. This American Idol alum gained recognition earlier this year when he announced his run for Congress. On January 10, he posted a three minute announcing his run for Congress. In present day, he is still working toward this goal.
