American Idol Season 20 has been in production for quite a while now, and we finally have an official premiere date. All three judges, plus host Ryan Seacrest, will be back for the show’s fifth season on ABC as they try to find the next great singer.

When Does ‘American Idol’ Season 20 Premiere?

American Idol Season 20 will premiere on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. It will also be available to stream on Hulu. The show tweeted the premiere date on Thursday along with a photo of the judges and host posing next to a cake celebrating 20 years of the show.

In addition to being the show’s twentieth season, 2022 also marks 20 years since the show first premiered on FOX in 2002. We’re sure the show will mark this milestone when it returns to our TV screens, perhaps with a look back at some memorable moments. Or maybe just the cake.

Last season, heartthrob Chayce Beckham won the show. He recently put out a new single with country star Lindsay Ell, called “Can’t Do Without Me.” We can’t wait to find out who will follow in Beckham’s footsteps next year.

The Judges Have Already Been Filming Season 20

Production on Season 20 of American Idol started earlier this year, with judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan returning to the table. Filming began in Austin, Texas in early October. That’s a long time for singers to wait before their auditions air next year.

Initial auditions for this season occurred virtually and through video submissions, instead of the usual in-person Idol Across America tour. It looks like the judges’ auditions will still occur in-person, as behind-the-scenes tidbits from the set show the judges at their classic table.

Luke Bryan recently shared a funny clip from the filming of the current season when Katy Perry guest-hosted The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In the video, Perry can be seen grabbing Bryan by the shoulders to scare him during an audition. We look forward to even more judge shenanigans when the show premieres February 27.
