‘Alter Ego’ Recap: Was This the Weakest Head to Head Round of the Season?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

On Wednesday night, FOX’s new singing competition Alter Ego returned for another episode of the Head-to-Head round. The series, hosted by Rocsi Diaz, uses modern motion-capture technology to put a totally new spin on the classic talent show format.

The show’s contestants design their own avatar or “Alter Ego.” They control the avatar’s movements from backstage while they perform. The winner of this season will receive $100,000, as well as the mentorship of the show’s celebrity judges — Alanis Morissette, Grimes, Nick Lachey, and Will.i.am.

Tonight, four more of the remaining contestants performed. They were separated into pairs, with the judges choosing only one of the two to move on to the Semifinals. That means two singers were eliminated during tonight’s show.

Wolfgang Champagne Easily Beats the Loverboy in ‘Alter Ego’ Matchup

During Wednesday’s show, Wolfgang Champagne (Matthew Lord) went up against the Loverboy (Anthony Flammia) in a Head-to-Head. Wolfgang performed “Un-Break My Heart,” once again subverting our expectations by showing off his operative voice.

The Loverboy, meanwhile, sang a questionable cover of “Toxic” by Britney Spears. Grimes said it was “one of the weakest performances” of the competition so far, but she argued that it was nevertheless “one of the best creative decisions” of the season.

Lachey disagreed with her, saying vocals are important, and the Loverboy wasn’t singing in the right key. Morissette asked him to try the song higher, and while it sounded better, it still wasn’t great. Three out of the four judges voted to send Wolfgang to the Semifinals.

That means the Loverboy was eliminated. For his goodbye performance, he sang “I Want You to Want Me” by Cheap Trick, and he honestly should have gone with that song for his earlier performance. The judges even gave him a standing ovation, and Grimes said he was “cooler than your Alter Ego.”

Fern Has a Great Attitude After Being Eliminated

The second Head-to-Head of the night was between Fern (Mia Cherise Hall) and Misty Rose (Samaera Hirsch). Fern sang Lady Gaga’s song “You & I,” while Misty performed “Woman” by Kesha. The singers shared that they’ve become close on the show, which made it hard to compete against each other.

Both artists delivered great performances, but the judges leaned toward Misty Rose, with three of them voting to send her to the Semifinals. That meant that Fern was eliminated. We love the positive attitude she displayed after her farewell performance.

Fern sang “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri as she revealed herself. She told the judges she was “super duper grateful” and “so excited” to have appeared on the show. Mia has Tourette syndrome, and she said she loved having the opportunity to be herself. Lachey called her “adorable,” and we have to agree.

Next week is the final Head-to-Head round before we move on to the Semifinals.
