‘AGT’ Star Angelica Hale Set to Make Acting Debut in ‘American Reject’
Angelica Hale is set to make her big-screen debut this April in the movie American Reject. Hale is a supporting character alongside some huge names in the industry. Billy Ray Cyrus, Keala Settle, Rebecca Black, and more are apart of this film.
Hale shared the poster for the upcoming film on Instagram. The young singer shared her excitement about the role while telling fans that the film is set to release on April 12. This film stars the film’s writer Kathleen Elizabeth Monteleone.
The inspiration behind American Reject comes from the writer’s own experience on NBC’s 2007 competition “Grease: You’re the One That I Want.” Monteleone took part of this nationwide search and finished it out in fourth place. This comedy film follows the main character, Kay Montgomery, after she wins runner up in the fictional singing competition show, Popstar Now.
Following her loss, the network decides to create another segment involving life after the show. Since Kay has nothing lined up, the segment follows her as she moves back in with her mother. The plotline of the story is quite clever considering no one ever gets to see what happens to runners up after they don’t win grand prize.

From the trailer, it’s evident that Kay’s character is still in shambles as she accepts to be apart of the next Popstar now segment. The cameraman follows Kay around in her hometown, including in the mall where no one recognizes her.
Hale is seen as the character Anna, who Kay’s mother has been training vocally. Anna brings up the local competition spring spectacular and attempts to talk her into it. From the trailer, it seems like Kay leaves before the spectacular to further her career. The end of the trailer introduces all of the big names of the cast, with Hale’s singing in the background.
Even though Hale’s part in the upcoming film is rather small, she shines in the trailer. I think this is a great role for Hale to debut in. The 14 year old is able to explore a new skill, while showing off the one that made her famous. It’s also completely fitting for her to be apart of a film exploring what it’s like to win second place in a competition since she is a runner up herself.
Monteleone and Hale have a superstar cast alongside them for this release. American Reject also stars Billy Ray Cyrus, internet sensation Rebecca Black, The Greatest Showman actress Keala Settle, and more. American Reject premieres on April 12 on both Amazon and Apple. The film is now available for pre-order on both streaming services. Ahead of the release, American Reject has won multiple awards at the Adirondack Film Festival, Bend Film Festival, and the Las Vegas International Film and Screenwriting Festival. This film was also screened at the New Orleans Film Festival in 2020.
