Earlier this week, Selena Gomez released the deluxe version of her album Rare. It features three new bonus tracks, including a song called “Souvenir.” The lyrics have fans speculating that it’s about Selena’s ex The Weeknd.
According to Hollywood Life, the other two songs are “Boyfriend” and “She.” But Abelina fans on Twitter are obsessed with the lyrics in “Souvenir” — and one line in particular.
The Weeknd: “Won’t you call out my name?”
Selena: “Calling your name, only language I can speak.”
“Calling your name, the only language I can speak / Taking my breath, a souvenir that you can keep,” Selena sings in the chorus of the song. It might not seem like much of a clue, but fans are connecting it to a song by The Weeknd called “Call Out My Name.”
The Weeknd allegedly wrote that song about Selena, releasing it a few months after they broke up. So fans think Selena’s lyric about calling her lover’s name must be a reference to her relationship with The Weeknd. One fan even took this as evidence that “they really loved each other.”
Hollywood Life points out other lyrics connecting to Selena’s time with The Weeknd, including references to “New York back in August,” specifically naming “Jane and Greenwich street.” In 2017, the couple spent time together in Manhattan while Selena was there filming A Rainy Day in New York.
At one point, the 27-year-old also sings, “Swimming in your eyes, in your eyes, in your eyes.” The Weeknd has a song on his latest album called In Your Eyes. Listen to the full song “Souvenir” below, and decide for yourself.
How Long Were Selena And The Weeknd Together?
The couple was first seen showing PDA in Los Angeles in January 2017. Not long after that, the pair took a romantic trip to Italy together. She would later join him on his Starboy tour. In May, they hit the Met Gala red carpet together.
Selena and The Weeknd broke up in October 2017 after 10 months together, citing the difficulties of a long-distance relationship. Around the same time, Selena appeared to have reconnected with her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber.
In March 2018, The Weeknd released an EP called My Dear Melancholy, which fans believed to be about his breakup with Selena. It featured the song “Call Out My Name.”
